21 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Getting or Adopting a Dog

Only jump in out of excitement to get a dog after fully assessing your ability to give the dog all the care he or she needs. In the dog world, it’s emotional love vs. the capability to care for a dog.

Finding a healthy, nice-looking dog at your friend’s, relative’s, or neighbor’s place should never excite you to get a dog. There is a lot of sacrifice behind the nice-looking dog you have admired in terms of time, finances, etc.

In this blog post, we provide you with 21 questions to help you genuinely assess yourself to see if you are ready to be a dog parent.

  1. Why are you getting or adopting a dog? (pet, companion, breeding, guarding, therapy dog, etc.) Different dog breeds are made to perform particular activities.
  1. Are you financially stable enough to foot all the dog’s bills without compromising or feeling stressed? (vet bills, proper feeding, grooming, etc.)
  1. Do you know the basics of taking care of a dog? For the first time, dog owners seek preliminary knowledge about dog care, e.g., vaccination, feeding, exercise, etc. Losing a pet is absurd due to mistakes made out of ignorance.
  1. What sex of dog do you want?
  1. What age of dog do you want? Old dogs are difficult to teach new behaviors. Puppies are easy to train in new ways. Those looking for guard dogs to immediately deploy need an old dog.
  1. Do you have enough history for the dog you want? Some dogs have hereditary health complications, e.g., heart disease, neurological disorders, and bleeding disorders. For shelter dogs, know their problems and assess if you can deal with them.
  1. Is the dog fully vaccinated and up-to-date? If yes, ask for a vaccination card. If not, when were they scheduled for vaccination?
  1. Are the family members, neighbors, and landlords willing to accept a dog as part of the family?
  1. Do you have time to stimulate your dog mentally, e.g., through regular exercises and playing?
  1. Is your home spacious enough to accommodate the size of the dog you want? Large dog breeds vs. small dog breeds
  1. Where will you get veterinary services? E.g., grooming, vaccination, emergency treatment, etc.
  1. Do you have any pets at home? If yes, will they properly bond with the new entrant, consciously introduce dogs to cats and dogs of the same size, sex, and age.
  1. Is the dog breed you want allowed by the authorities in your state or country?
  1. Is your compound free of poisonous plants, flowers, and weeds to dogs, e.g., tulips, ivy, etc.?
  1. Are the weather conditions favorable for the dog breed you want? Raising fluffy dogs (dogs with a lot of hair) is stressful in areas with high temperatures.
  1. Do you know the specific requirements for the particular dog breed that you want?
  1. What are you planning to feed your dog? Is the supplier trustworthy and reliable?
  1. Do you want an in-house dog or an outdoor dog? Are the outdoor dog kennel conditions favorable during harsh weather conditions?
  1. Is your home free of ectoparasites, e.g., ticks, fleas, lice, and mites?
  1. Is the dog breed you want gentle with kids?
  1. Is your home dog-proof? Check for any breakages in the fence or house where the dog can easily escape.
