When Is the Best Time to Spay a Dog?

A responsible dog owner recently visited Superior Animal Clinic with a question many pet owners ask:

“Doctor, my female dog is growing up quickly. When is the best time to spay her?”

It’s a great question, and one that doesn’t have the exact same answer for every dog. The right timing depends on factors such as your dog’s age, breed, size, and overall health.

Spaying is one of the most important decisions a dog owner can make for their pet’s long-term well-being. Besides preventing unwanted pregnancies, it can reduce the risk of serious health problems and help your dog live a healthier, more comfortable life.

So, when exactly should you spay your dog?

The answer depends on your dog’s age, breed, size, and overall health. Let’s explore what veterinarians generally recommend and why timing matters.

What Is Spaying?

Spaying is a surgical procedure that removes a female dog’s ovaries and usually the uterus mainly to prevent it from getting puppies. Take it as the ultimate family planning method that prevents the dog from going into heat and eliminates the possibility of pregnancy.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia by a qualified veterinarian and is considered a routine surgery.

Recently I wrote an article that compared spaying to use of Injectable Contraceptives for a dog to prevent unwanted puppies. You can read the full article here .

The Ideal Age to Spay a Dog

For many dogs, veterinarians recommend spaying before the first heat cycle, which often occurs between 6 and 12 months of age.

Spaying before the first heat offers several benefits:

  • Prevents unwanted pregnancies
  • Reduces the risk of mammary (breast) tumors
  • Eliminates the risk of uterine infections (pyometra)
  • Prevents heat-related behaviors

However, the ideal timing may vary depending on the breed and size of the dog.

Small Breeds

Small breed dogs like Maltese , Dachshund, Pugs ,Pomeranian and others  often mature earlier and may be suitable candidates for spaying around six months of age.

Large and Giant Breeds

Some veterinarians recommend waiting slightly longer for large and giant breeds to allow proper bone and joint development. Your veterinarian can advise on the most appropriate timing for your specific dog.

You should also note that other factors such as overall dog health are also considered when deciding the time to spay your dog.

Can an Adult Dog Be Spayed?

Yes. Adult dogs can be safely spayed, and many benefit from the procedure even later in life. For example a dog rescue organisation in Mbuya spays all dogs it rescues to stop the number of stray dogs in Kampala.

If your dog has already gone through one or more heat cycles, spaying can still:

  • Prevent future pregnancies
  • Eliminate the risk of pyometra
  • Reduce certain reproductive health problems

Before surgery, your veterinarian may recommend a health examination and, in some cases, blood tests to ensure your dog is fit for anesthesia.

Should You Spay During Heat?

While it is possible to spay a dog during her heat cycle, many veterinarians prefer to wait until the cycle has ended.

During heat, the reproductive organs receive increased blood flow, which can make surgery more complex and increase the risk of bleeding.

If your dog is currently in heat, consult your veterinarian about the safest timing for the procedure. To add onto this, dog’s heat lasts between 2 to 4 weeks and occurs twice a year. This can help you plan properly for your dog’s spay surgery.

Benefits of Spaying

Spaying provides more than just birth control. It can help:

Prevent Life-Threatening Uterine Infections

Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that commonly affects older, unspayed female dogs. Emergency treatment is often expensive and can be life-threatening if not addressed quickly.

Reduce the Risk of Mammary Cancer

Research has shown that spaying before the first heat cycle significantly reduces the risk of mammary tumors.

Eliminate Heat Cycles

No more:

  • Bleeding around the home
  • Male dogs gathering around your property
  • Accidental matings
  • Heat-related stress and roaming

How Much Does Spaying Cost?

In many veterinary clinics in Kampala, including areas such as Buziga, Lubowa, Munyonyo, Makindye, Mengo, Rubaga, and Kabowa, the cost of spaying typically ranges between UGX 350,000 and UGX 650,000, depending on the dog’s size, age, and health condition.

Although it is a one-time expense, it can save pet owners significant costs associated with unwanted litters and reproductive health problems in the future.

Note : Careful when choosing a veterinary clinic to get your dog spayed , besides the price, you will need a qualified team to do this surgery.
