Uganda’s rainy season brings relief from the heat, but for dog owners, it also comes with a few extra responsibilities. Wet compounds, muddy walks, increased humidity and parasites can all create problems for dogs if proper care is overlooked.
Here are practical ways to keep your dog healthy throughout the rainy season.
1. Keep Your Dog Dry
One of the simplest but most important things you can do is keep your dog dry.
If your dog gets soaked during a walk or while playing outside, dry it properly when it comes back indoors. Dogs such as Maltese can get mut if their fur is not dried properly.

- The belly
- Paws and spaces between the toes

Discourage this most especially if you live in areas with poor sanitation. In Kampala it’s common for people to dump rubbish , sewage and other dirty things in running water . Allowing your dog to drink from a trench might lead to serious intestinal complications.
Stagnant water can also contain contaminants and microorganisms that may cause illness.
Instead, make sure your dog has clean, fresh drinking water available at home, especially after exercise.
If you’re taking your dog for a walk, carrying water can also prevent it from searching for puddles.
5. Keep Your Dog’s Sleeping Area Clean and Dry
A good kennel isn’t simply somewhere for the dog to hide from the rain.
It should provide:
- A dry floor
- Protection from rain
- Adequate ventilation
- Dry bedding
- Protection from excessive wind
- Good drainage around the structure
Wash bedding when necessary and allow it to dry completely before putting it back.
If the kennel smells damp, feels wet or regularly floods during heavy rain, it needs attention.
6. Keep Your Dog’s Coat Clean
Dogs can bring mud, dirt and other material into their coat after playing outside.
You don’t necessarily need to bathe your dog every time it gets a little dirty.
Instead, clean muddy areas and give the dog a proper bath when necessary using a dog-appropriate shampoo.
Avoid repeatedly using harsh household soaps or human shampoos because they may irritate a dog’s skin.
Dogs with long or thick coats may require additional grooming because moisture and dirt can become trapped close to the skin.
7. Keep Food Dry and Properly Stored
Rainy weather also means increased moisture and humidity.
Store your dog’s food in a clean, dry and properly sealed container.
Don’t leave food exposed to rain or damp conditions.
If food develops mould, an unusual smell or other obvious signs of spoilage, don’t feed it to your dog.
Fresh food should also not be left sitting outside for long periods, particularly in warm and humid conditions.
8. Don’t Skip Vaccinations
Rainy-season care isn’t only about bathing and keeping your dog dry.
Your dog’s routine preventive healthcare should continue throughout the year.
Make sure vaccinations are up to date, particularly for puppies.
Diseases such as parvovirus can be extremely serious, especially in young dogs that have not completed their vaccination schedule.
If you’re unsure whether your dog’s vaccinations are current, check its vaccination record and speak to your veterinarian.
9. Maintain Regular Deworming and Parasite Control
Rainy-season care is also a good opportunity to check whether your dog’s parasite-control programme is up to date.
Depending on your dog’s lifestyle, age and health, your veterinarian may recommend regular treatment against:
- Intestinal worms
- Ticks
- Fleas
- Other parasites
Don’t simply buy medication because another dog is using it.
The correct product and dosage can depend on the dog’s weight, age and health status.
10. Be Careful During Heavy Storms
Some dogs become frightened by thunder and heavy rain.
A frightened dog may try to escape from the compound, jump over a fence or run through an open gate.
During heavy storms:
Keep your dog somewhere secure.
If your dog normally sleeps outside, consider bringing it into a safe sheltered area during particularly severe weather.
This is especially important in busy areas of Kampala where an escaping dog could end up near traffic.
A Simple Rainy-Season Routine for Dog Owners
You don’t need a complicated system.
Every day
Morning
- Check that your dog has clean drinking water.
- Check its general behaviour and appetite.
- Make sure its sleeping area is dry.
After outdoor activity
- Check the paws.
- Remove mud.
- Dry the coat if the dog got wet.
- Look for ticks.
Evening
- Check the kennel or sleeping area again.
- Make sure bedding is dry.
- Store food properly.
Every few weeks
- Check the dog’s coat and skin carefully.
- Review parasite prevention.
- Check vaccination and deworming records.
- Groom the dog as needed.
