Deworming schedule for adult dogs and puppies
Worm infestation is one of the killer conditions or diseases for puppies in developing countries. Many people in the dog world do deworming as a hobby for their dogs. They only deworm when they feel like, they do not follow any schedule.
Most people in the dog industry start to deworm puppies at 3 months, which is not recommended. It puts a puppy’s life at high risk, compromises their growth rate, and often causes death.
This blog post gives you the best deworming schedule for your dog or puppy and signs that your dog needs deworming.
What are the most common worms in dogs?
There are two common worms in dogs: roundworms and tapeworms.
Roundworms (Toxacara canis, Toxascaris leonina, heartworms, etc.) are white or light brown and resemble spaghetti when vomited or defecated.
Tapeworms (Dipylidium caninum) are long, flat, and segmented whitish or creamy worms that invade the intestines. They can be passed out as a whole or as proglottids via feces. Proglottids resemble grains of rice when released in feces.
How do dogs get worms?
Roundworms (Toxacara canis or Toxascaris leonina)
Adult dogs get roundworms after eating material or food contaminated with roundworm larvae.
Puppies get roundworms when still in the uterus; the roundworm larvae cross the placenta from mother to puppy. Or get the larvae during nursing via mother’s milk.
Heartworms are spread by a bite from an infected mosquito.
Tapeworms are spread from dog to dog by fleas.
