What are eye boogers?

It is a collection of lubrication fluids produced by the eye glands.

Where do the eye boogers or the white material in my dog’s eye come from?

The glands in the eyes produce fluids for lubrication; these fluids are drained from the eye by a duct after lubrication. However, if the duct is compromised, it drains less of the fluids that later pile in the corners of the eyes to form boogers (the white material).

What are the causes of eye boogers in dogs?

Blocked ducts.

Dehydration

Worm infestation

Vitamin deficiencies

Eye injuries

Irritants in the eyes

Entropion (inward folding of the eyelid)

Allergies

Foreign materials in the eyes, such as dust, smoke, small grains, etc.

Keeping the dog in the dark places 24/7. (poorly built outdoor kennels that do not allow light into the dog’s house)

How to remove eye boogers from a dog’s eyes

Properly restrain the dog.

Get sterile water and a clean, soft white cloth.

Gently flush the eyes with sterile water until all the white material is out of the eye.

Soak a white cloth in sterile water and gently wipe the eye dry.

What is the treatment and prevention of eye boogers in dogs?

A successful treatment plan for eye boogers depends on determining the precise cause; the commonly prescribed drugs and management practices are:

Regular deworming

Vitamin supplement

Provide drinking water 24/7.

Eye drops

Antihistamines

Keep the fur around the dog’s eyes short.

Surgical correction of entropion

Topical and systemic antibiotics.

Do not keep the dog indoors 24/7.

Make sure your dog’s eyes are always clean and free of debris; regularly wipe any discharge; and monitor any abnormalities. If eye boogers are persistent, consult the nearby vet doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
