Where Do Dogs Get Parvo from In Uganda?

Parvo is a term commonly used to refer to parvovirosis, a viral disease.

Parvo is the most commonly encountered disease by vets in Kampala, Uganda, among dogs (mostly puppies). It manifests mainly with diarrhea (bloody), vomiting, and lack of appetite.

Some countries are parvo-free; however, in Uganda, parvo is endemic (it’s a regular disease).

Parvo virus is resistant to a number of disinfectants, humidity, high and low temperatures, which makes it able to stay in the environment for years without desiccation (dying).

So how do dogs get parvovirus from the environment into their bodies?

Dogs get parvo virus into their bodies by eating or licking materials contaminated with parvo virus. These materials can be toys, food, bowels, leashes, human hands, clothes, shoes, e.t.c.

How do materials or surfaces get contaminated by parvovirus?

Dogs suffering from parvovirosis pass out the virus via feces. The poop decomposes and leaves the virus in the soil or surfaces. (which makes soil or surfaces contaminated).

From the contaminated surfaces, the virus is moved to other places by wind, humans, dogs, vehicles, or any other objects.

In countries like Uganda, where parvo is endemic, most of the places (roads and compounds) are contaminated; therefore, strict biosecurity measures are key to preventing parvo.

Parvo is a deadly viral disease that can claim a pet’s life in a few days.
