Recommended vaccination schedule for cats in Uganda
Cats are supposed to be vaccinated against several diseases, but unfortunately, most vaccines are not readily available on the Ugandan market.
Contact your area veterinarian to help you get the available cat vaccines in your region and schedule a suitable vaccination program for your cat.
As a cat parent, ensure your meow is fully vaccinated and up-to-date.
Vaccination schedule for cats in Uganda
There are two recommended vaccination schedules for cats depending at the age of the cat when the first vaccine was given.
First option (first recommended vaccination schedules for cats in Uganda).
Number of vaccination shots | Type of vaccine given | Age of the cat at which the vaccine is given |
1st shot | Cat cocktail | 8 weeks |
2nd shot | Rabies | 12 weeks, then annually |
3rd shot | Cat cocktail | 12 weeks, then annually |
At 12 weeks, rabies and the cat cocktail are given simultaneously, and the dose is then boosted annually for the entire cat’s life.
Second option (second vaccination schedule for cats in Uganda)
Number of vaccination shots | Type of vaccine given | Age of the cat at which the vaccine is given |
1st shot | Rabies | 12 weeks, then annually |
2nd shot | Cat cocktail | 12 weeks |
3rd shot | Cat cocktail | 15-16 weeks, then annually |
Cat Cocktail is a vaccine that protects against feline rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus, and panleukopenia. Its contents vary based on the brand used. Also known as FVRCP
It’s recommended you follow the first option. Cats below 12 weeks old in Uganda are at a higher risk of catching feline panleukopenia.
NB Ask for a vaccination card from a vet who has vaccinated your cat; it’s the main proof of vaccination.
The cat vaccination card should have the following:
Owners details
Cats details
Stickers of the vaccine used (both rabies and cocktail)
Next due when the vaccine is to be repeated
The date when the vaccine was administered.
N.B. Only jump in to vaccinate your cat after seeking professional advice from a nearby veterinarian. Misuse of vaccines can cause adverse effects on your pet.
Your pet’s life should never be taken for granted.
