How many times has your meow puked today?

Do you want to know the reason why your cat is throwing up?

This blog post discusses the most common cause of vomiting among cats and the available treatment options.

Puking is a sign that your meow is unwell or sick. Get to know the 30 signs of a sick cat.

No cat parent is happy to see their babies puke at any one moment. Vomiting causes dehydration and extremely weakens the cat in a few hours. Puking is an indicator of an abnormality in the stomach or the intestines.

What is causing my cat to throw up green, yellow, black, whitish, or red material?

Depending on what’s in the stomach of your meow, the cat’s vomit may look red, white, foamy, coffee brown, yellow, green, or another color.

The nature of cat vomits and their meaning

Green or yellow vomitThe cat is puking bile. Bile is juice released by the gall bladder to digest fats; if not used up, it piles in the stomach and is later vomited out.
Red vomit The cat is puking blood, which indicates wounds and bleeding in the stomach walls.
Coffee brown or black vomitA cat is puking digested blood or blood mixed with stomach acid, which indicates bleeding or wounds in the stomach walls.
White, foamy, or mucus vomitA cat is puking a mixture of saliva and mucus produced by stomach glands.

How can I stop my cat from vomiting?

Home treatment can worsen vomiting if given without first establishing the exact cause of puking or seeking professional guidance.

The commonly prescribed drugs and prevention practices are:

Routine deworming

Routine vaccination

Anti-emetics

Anti-allergic drugs

Activated charcoal

Antibiotics

Anti ulcers

IV fluids for dehydrated cats

Avoid abrupt changes in diet.

Proper hygiene

It’s important to distinguish between regurgitation and vomiting because the latter requires an intense or forceful contraction of the abdominal or stomach muscles. Regurgitation, on the other hand, causes little or no stomach contractions.
