Simple steps to follow while grooming your pet (dog or cat).
  • Prepare all the equipment needed for complete pet (dog or cat) grooming. Commonly used instruments include combs, brushes, scissors, nail clippers, a grooming table, a leash, towels, hair clippers, shampoo, a hair dryer, etc.
  • Get the pet and give them a few minutes to calm down while in the grooming room. For aggressive pets, administer slight sedatives.
  • Put the pet on the grooming table and restrain them in the best position that will allow you to do a perfect job with no stress on the pet. For unsedated pets, it’s usually in a standing position. For the sedated clients, it is in a lying posture.
  • Identify any matted hair. Cut or comb it out.
  • With a comb or a brush, continuously comb the hair to remove all the loose hair and tufts.
  • Comb the hair upwards to see if it has an uneven length. Use scissors to cut the protruded hair to make it even.
  • Carefully cut the nails. Make sure you remove the required length (do not cause bleeding).
  • Wash the pet using the recommended pet shampoo and lukewarm water. For the ears, use a soft white pad to wipe them.
  • Towel-dry the pet. Gently use a hair dryer to dry the pet up to avoid entangling the hair.

After 2–5 months. However, the frequency of grooming is usually affected by several factors, which include:

Factors that influence how often to groom your pet

Age of the pet: youthful pets are groomed more often than young and old pets due to their high hair growth rate.

Weather conditions: Pets receive more grooming in the summer or hot months than in the winter or wet season.

Type of hair coat: pets with short hair coats are less groomed than those with long fur coats.

Hygiene of the pet environment: in a clean environment, pets need less grooming.

Underlying disease condition(s): skin diseases and ectoparasites need more grooming.
