Types of people who should not own cats

Short-coated Gray Cat

Owning a cat has many benefits, including stress management, companionship, mental health improvement, etc.

However, a few people should own a cat; depending on your personality, schedule, and financial status, you might be fit to own a cat or not be a good cat parent.

In this blog post, we discuss the people who should not own cats and the solutions to transform them.

Can every person be a cat parent?

Not every person is meant to own a cat. It’s 100% fine not to like cats as long as you do not harm them.

Categories of people unfit to own cats include:
People allergic to cats

10% of people have pet allergies. Cat allergy is twice as common as dog allergy.

Cats produce the D1 protein found in their saliva, urine, and dandruff that triggers allergic reactions in humans.

Solution: Get cat breeds that are less likely to cause allergic reactions in humans, e.g., Siamese, Balinese, Oriental shorthair cats, etc.

People with bad tempers:

Cats are like kids; they can destroy things in the house, i.e., scratch furniture, bite shoes, etc. People with bad tempers end up beating or injuring the cat.

Solution: Get an emotional coach before getting a cat.

Irresponsible people

If you get a cat, provide all his/her needs, i.e., proper feeding, health care, mental stimulation, etc.

Responsible cat parents teach other family members how to treat a cat.

Solution: Train yourself and other family members to be responsible.

People who cannot treat cats as family.

Cats like socializing with people; if left in isolation, they feel lonely and depressed.

Cats should not be treated as livestock.

Solution: Adjust your mind from seeing a cat as a pet to a family member.

People whose neighborhood is unfriendly to cats

Places with a lot of traffic, stray dogs, and neighbors who do not like cats are unfit to have cats. Such places predispose cats to injuries and death.

Solution: shift to a cat-friendly area.

People with no routine

Cats do not like abrupt programs or changes in daily routines. Humans with no routine stress their cats

Solution: Get a schedule to follow, i.e., keep the time you come back, you leave, and the feeding constant.

Workaholics

Cats need time for socialization and mental stimulation; you should spend 4-minute, 5-minute, and 15-minute play sessions in a day with your cat.

Lack of socialization and mental stimulation causes behavior problems that affect your cat’s quality of life.

Solution: get cat sitters or provide automatic playing toys.

Trichophobic people

All cats with fur shed hair, whether healthy or unhealthy. Trichophobic people can’t comfortably live with cats.

Solution: get hairless cats, e.g., sphynx cats.

Felinophobic people

Some people fear cats due to their experience with cats, e.g., getting bitten or scratched by cats, or some come from communities where cats symbolize bad omens.

Solution: join communities with cats to know the benefits of owning a cat; slowly the phobia will vanish.

Unhygienic people

If you can’t regularly clean your cat’s litter box, you are unfit to be a cat parent. Cats do not like dirt, and leaving the litter box dirty predisposes your cat to stress, infection, and constipation.

Solution: Pay someone to clean the litter box.

Financially unstable people

Cats are expensive to feed, treat, and care for. If your income is low, don’t get a cat; it might end up suffering in your hands.

Solution: work hard or save upfront before getting a cat.

People whose religion or culture is against cats

Some cultures and religions see cats as devils or agents of devils. They believe that enemies send witches through cats.

If you are from such a community, you might not be comfortable with cats

Solution: join communities of people who love cats to change your mind.

Conclusion

Pregnant women should clean their cat’s poop with gloves. Cats have a parasite (Toxoplasma gondii) that causes abortion.
