Cats as pets from Ugandan or African perspective

cat, kitten, pet

The number of cats (feral and pet) has tremendously increased in Uganda in the past 5 years.

With increased literacy and more people joining the middle class, companion cats have increased.

In some communities mostly rural areas, cat phobia is high due to negative myths about cats.

How did cat phobia start in Uganda?

In Uganda, cat phobia is instilled in us when we are still young by our parents. The only good thing associated with cats is hunting and killing rats that eat our seasonal harvests kept in the stores.

The rest of the stories about cats were negative, i.e., cats cause abortion, purring causes pneumonia, cat hair causes asthma if inhaled, and hissing causes blindness, which is incorrect.

As kids, the disadvantages of owning a cat outweighed the benefits. This marked the genesis of cat phobia among most Ugandans.

Why do Africans (Ugandans) keep cats?

The common benefits associated with keeping cats in Uganda are:

Hunting and killing rats

In some communities, white cats are a sign of good luck.

Cats kill vermin, e.g., snakes, lizards, etc.

Companion, cats provide company.

Disadvantages linked to owning a cat are:

Cats cause abortions.

Black cats are a sign of bad omens.

Cats are not good with babies.

Cats scratch

Cat fur causes asthma when inhaled.

Hissing causes blindness in humans.

Direct eye contact with a cat in darkness causes blindness in humans.

Purring causes pneumonia in humans.

Cats sniff or lick utensils, which spread diseases to humans.

Cats eat backyard chicks.

All the reasons cited above are opinions with no basic scientific evidence.

Debunking all anti-cat myths with evidence

Reduce the feral cat population. Most bad habits associated with cats are from feral cats, e.g., eating chicks when searching for food.

Teach kids in elementary school the benefits of loving cats.

Show cat-related movies to kids.

Encourage famous people (religious leaders, politicians, rich people, and community influencers) to post pictures and videos of them with their cats.

Teach mothers the benefits of raising kids with cats.

Provide subsidized vaccinations to cat owners.

Conclusion

Cats make good companions when domesticated at a younger age. It’s difficult to train an old feral cat
