Home remedies are important to save your pet’s life in an emergency if you are far from your vet.

They control the worsening of a condition and provide temporary relief as you seek professional treatment.

Are home remedies important to know as a pet parent?

Home remedies can save your pet’s life if done under professional guidance.

Even if you have your vet, some conditions are acute, but by the time your veterinarian arrives, it might be too late to save your pet’s life.

Activated charcoal, dewormers, disinfectants, antibiotics, painkillers, bandages, etc. are home remedies a pet parent should have.

In this post, we discuss the best home remedies a pet parent must have

The best home remedies for dogs and cats include:
Activated charcoal

It’s given to poisoned pets or those that have eaten a toxic substance. Activated charcoal prevents the absorption of ingested poison, which is passed out with poop.

Dewormers

Many pet parents overlook worms, yet they are one of the common killers of pets in developing countries.

Use a dewormer that is effective against roundworms and tapeworms.

Disinfectants, i.e., iodine, spirits, or chlorohexidine

Disinfectants clean topical wounds to avoid infections.

Anti-ectoparasitic medications, i.e., fipronil, Simparica, Bravecto, a medicated shampoo, etc.

Parasites, e.g., ticks, spread diseases to pets, i.e., ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, etc. if not prevented.

These drugs prevent parasites that cause or spread diseases to your pet.

Over-the-counter antibiotics

O.T.C. antibiotics are broad-spectrum antibiotics with a wide safety margin (few side effects).

Pets get bacterial infections from wounds or eating contaminated stuff. Contact your vet to prescribe the best antibiotic for your pet.

Over-the-counter painkillers

OT.C. painkillers prevent control or reduce pain in your pet. Contact your veterinarian to prescribe a painkiller that is easy to give and has few or no side effects.

Wound spray

These are topical aerosols with broad-spectrum antibiotics and painkillers. They facilitate wound healing by preventing infections and reducing pain.

Bandages

They apply pressure to stop external bleeding or cover the wound to avoid contamination.

Some bandages contain disinfectants that kill the germs in the wound.

Inhalers

Inhalers are small handheld devices that deliver medications to the lungs through the mouth to treat asthma.

If your pet has asthma, you should have an inhaler, to immediately administer the drugs in case of an attack.

ORS

These are used to rehydrate pets that have been vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding. They help to replace the lost electrolytes and fluids.

Anti-epileptic drugs

These are drugs used to treat epileptic seizures. If your pet has epilepsy, you should have these drugs.

Other home practices that will increase the lifespan of your pet are:

Routine vaccination, grooming, exercise, environmental enrichment, proper feeding, spaying, neutering, etc.

Conclusion

Home remedies should be given under professional guidance, if poorly used they can worsen the condition.
